What are saddle bars?

5th March 2015

Three saddle bars support this stained glass window

Saddle bars (also window bars/tie bars) are intended to support the lead work of leaded lights or stained glass windows.

They are a horizontal metal bar set across a window opening.

Wires, either copper or lead, are soldered to the leaded light or stained glass panel; these are then tied to the saddle bar. They add stability and prevent the leaded light from bowing.
