Restoration of stained glass windows at Grade II listed St. George’s Church – Thornton Hough, Wirral

12th August 2018

St. George’s URC Church is a beautiful Grade II listed sandstone building set in the heart of the Thornton Hough conservation area. The church was built at the start of the 20th century and designed in the Norman style by Lomax Simpson after he was commissioned by the first Lord Leverhulme. It was opened on the 29th May 1907 by Lady Lever. The impressive Romanesque carvings and stunning stained glass windows make this church very popular for weddings.

Following an act of vandalism at St. George’s Church K. G. Bell Ltd was called in to restore the damaged panel.

The bottom section of the stained glass panel was removed and temporary glazing fitted to make the church secure. Back at the studio the panel was dismantled back to the bare glass.

Where the glass was too badly damaged to be restored new glass was repainted and fired and bonded together with the glass that was salvageable. The whole panel was then releaded, waterproofed and refitted back into the window frame.

Have a look through the images below to see the restoration process at work.
