Repairing Coloured Leaded Lights in a Church – Wirral

18th October 2015

St. Catherine’s Church, Hoylake

St Catherine’s Church in Hoylake, Wirral, was designed by Bertrum Kirby and opened in 1928. Originally called St Catherine’s and St Martina’s, there have been a number of extensions added to the original building.

K. G. Bell Leaded Lights Ltd have repaired a number of windows at the church over the years, renovating many of the main isle windows in the body of the church around 1990.

More recently, we were asked to assess all the existing windows and recommend repair, or replacement where necessary. Due to the location’s salty air, a number of the original metal frames were delaminating, and there were a number of broken and damaged coloured leaded lights.

Metal frames were removed, shot blasted, zinc primed and polyurethane coated, which would protect them for around 15-20 years. Broken panes were fixed but, due to sunlight, the original colouring of the glass had changed considerably. This meant colour matching glass panes to remain consistent throughout the church.

Extra break leads and saddlebars were fitted to the leaded windows where necessary and for strengthening.
